Gird Systems - Phil McDonald

Research all of these grid methods.

Fibonacci Sequence

Not a mathematical equation is it a matter of proportion, ratio.

Get text in proportion. 55pt title - 34pt body copy by applying Fibonacci's sequence.

Dividing the page:
Golden Section

1.62 is the golden section

Fibonacci sequence ratio 8:13 links to Golden Sections

The rule of thirds

Grid Systems by Josef Muller-Brockmann

'according to a well known empirical rule there should be 7-10 words per line, the length of the line can be readily calculated'

People will generally tire if the length of a line is too long, similar effects on the eye of the reader if the line is to short. All depending on how much body copy there is.

'Sufficient leading between the lines is of the first importance for easy reading, if the lines are too close together the eye is forced to take in the interfering line.'
Although this doesn't apply to titles or headings as the purpose in to draw the attention of the eye.

People to research:
Jan Tschichold, Karel Teige, Moholy-Nagy, Max Bill

The more I read Grid systems I realise the design choices and formatting isn't just a visual style but purely function down to every detail. For example if the margins are to close to the edge of the page the user will put his her hands over the pictures or body copy.

'Margin of the same size can never result in an interesting design; they always create an impression of indecision and dullness.'
