100 Things // 10 Products // Rizla

I went to the local shop and bought a packet of Rizla. I deconstructed the Rizla pack to that I could get the template; couldn't seem to find any templates online. I'm glad I bought one though it seem to make more sense having a physical pack in front of me.

Here you can see the rolling paper template deconstructed:

Ideas:
Rolling Papers re-design
What I am planning on doing is trying to enlighten people who use rolling papers and present them the facts about cannabis. I will do this by creating a new released product - rolling papers. The idea would be that both CLEAR - cannabis law reform party and the fictional rolling paper brand would join to raise awareness about medical cannabis and cannabis use, truthful information.

One message I will try to show through the design of a conceptual rolling paper packet is the TOKEpure campaign on the CLEAR website. The message of TOKEpure is to not use tobacco when smoking cannabis. People who smoke cannabis for medical use and or recreation predominantly use tobacco with their cannabis. Although there is no proof that cannabis is linked to lung cancer there is more then enough evidence that links tobacco to lung cancer and other diseases; as most of us already know.

Aims/ Purpose of TOKEpure:
  • Convince people who are going to smoke weed even when its illegal, that they should not add Tobacco to the mix.
  • Provide medical cannabis users correct information
  • Generally try and spark some interest in medical cannabis
  • Try to make people more comfortable with the ideas that in the future there is a possibility of cannabis being legal to medical patients and maybe even recreational use at some point.
'As the government is normally eager to tell us tobacco is a killer. In fact Tobacco is responsible for 140,000 deaths each year in the UK alone and 5.4 million deaths worldwide according the World Health Organisation. Clearly, whatever the dangers of smoking cannabis might be, adding tobacco to the mix is only going to make things much, much worse.' - http://clear-uk.org/tokepure/

My research backs the need up to quit tobacco especially when smoked with cannabis. You could say tobacco gives cannabis a bad name.

Here you can see a few design examples, this is the poster for the new rolling papers. I will do the rolling paper packet next.

I used this texture which I got from http://infabshoes.com/2012/01/20/vintage-textiles-mania/

Filter Tips
The second idea was to promote using conventional tobacco filter tips if people are going to continue to smoke cannabis. When I was doing research though I couldn't find any evidence that it was substantially less harmful then smoking without a filter. Also when doing my research I found that the cannabis smoking community internationally has a idea that smoking cannabis in a joint with a tobacco filter reduces the effect of the THC. Although I found no evidence to back this idea up I couldn't find any evidence against it. Therefore there are no real grounds for promoting filter tips.

Cannabis users when smoking a joint generally use a rolled filter made out of usually cardboard, for example the Rizla packet. I thought maybe the same message of TOKEpure and presenting correct information could also be transferred onto filter tip card.

Giant Rolling Paper advert
I am going to make an interactive poster that will promote the rolling paper brand I have created. The poster will be a 3 dimensional large rolling paper packet that will contain rolling paper style posters. The idea being that someone passing would be intrigued to open the rolling paper packet to find it being full of papers, which are posters they can take away. I think its a pretty neat way of getting some to take a free poster and promote a product. I know i would pick one up and definitely tell people about where i got the poster from and how. Just a different media.

The giant rolling paper pack could be in shops, tobacconist, head shops, newsagents and off licenses.

Giant Rolling Paper posters
The poster that will go within the giant rolling pack will be a separate product. There would be multiples of this poster if the idea was to become reality but because of costs there will only be one promotional poster with the giant rolling paper pack. This thin paper poster will just feature some information about the new rolling papers.

Stickers X2

Two sets of promotional stickers that would be given away in various venues. Rolling papers are generally used by lots of people of all ages but I think the type of people that are interesting in picking up stickers are students who smoke cannabis or roll ups. So they could be promoted like alcohol at festivals or music venues. I think anywhere where students are it would be successful to promote my message as as a business idea I think it would be appropriate.

Flyer
I am going to create a more official flyer almost mimicking the style of an NHS informational product. The flyer would be left in different location like a gorilla style campaign for CLEAR. As the poster isn't promoting the sale of Truth rolling papers it doesn't have a function as business opportunity but exists for the CLEAR party. It will need a referral link to the CLEAR website and also have to communicate useful relevant information that might lead the audience to further explore medical cannabis and the facts.

Posters

2 posters that communicate the most relevant information from my perspective.
Mortality from alcohol, tobacco, road collisions and prescription drugs in relation to cannabis deaths resulting from intoxication. Info graphic style. Possibly A2 or A1?

1 poster showing the governments view on medical cannabis. There opinion being that they do not recognise cannabis to have any medicinal properties. I will graphically represent the conversation between Paul Flynn and James Brokenshire.

The 3 posters will have a link to CLEAR and would again only exist as a non profitable awareness campaign. Although any attention CLEAR gets may result in donation for the party which is a possibility.  More interest in medicinal cannabis the better.

  1. how do you get the design printed on to the cardboard?

  2. It was just a mock up so I photoshopped it on. I eventually printed it and printed on thick card so it allowed me to use a normal printer.

  3. Did you end up using glue or just folding the design into itself?
